Traditional vs. Modern Materials: How Fire Doors Have Evolved

The modern fire door as we know it hasn’t always been this way. Ruins from ancient civilisations, like Ancient Egyptians and the Romans, suggest that door-like barriers did exist back then. But these would have been predominantly made from stone, wood and other sturdy materials.

By the Middle Ages, doors were an integral part of buildings, with wooden door frames and planks with metal hinges and locks more commonplace. Fast forward to the late 18th century, design advancements like mortise locks, automatic closers, and hinges enabled doors to become much more secure and functional.

Now, modern fire doors are made using safe and approved materials – most commonly, timber. This is because it’s versatile, easily customisable, readily available, sustainable, and provides predictable char rates.

With its high temperature tolerance, steel is a solid choice for certain environments where hygiene is essential like commercial kitchens or healthcare settings. The strength and durability of a steel fire door also makes it ideal for buildings where high security is required, such as prisons.

But composite fire doors are increasingly popular. Made from a combination of fire-resistant materials like gypsum, steel and vermiculite boards, composite fire doors are a strong durable product that can withstand daily wear and tear and resist warping and cracking.

Innovative Fire Door Materials in Use Today

Intumescent materials

Intumescent materials have been used in various forms for some time. But it wasn’t until chemical advancements in the mid-20th century that manufacturers started using them for fire doors and other fire-safety products. 

So, what do intumescent materials do for fire doors? Essentially, intumescent materials expand when exposed to high temperatures, plugging any gaps between the frame and door so fire and smoke can’t escape.

You’ve probably already heard of intumescent strips and seals for fire doors. But intumescent paints and coatings, intumescent core materials and intumescent glazing are also commonly used for fire doors.

Fire-resistant glass

The main purpose of glazing on a fire door is to provide vision through the door leaf. But normal glass can only withstand temperatures of around 150 – 200°C before it starts to weaken or break.

That’s why manufacturers use fire-rated glass. Good quality fire-rated glass is specially designed to withstand much higher temperatures – in some cases exceeding 1000°C.

There are lots of different types of fire-resistant glass you can use. And which one you opt for depends on where the door is going to be used and the fire rating it’s designed to meet.

Common types of glazing in fire doors include wired glass, ceramic glass, specially treated tempered glass and intumescent-laminated glass.

The core of a composite fire door typically consists of one or more fire-resistant material, such as mineral wool, gypsum, or particleboard.

The core is then covered with layers of other materials like wood veneer, high-pressure laminate, or PVCu (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride).

The combination of materials in a composite fire door result in a strong, durable product that can withstand daily wear and tear, as well as resist warping and cracking.

They offer excellent fire resistance, with ratings ranging from 30 to 120 minutes. And because they can be designed to mimic the appearance of solid wood, they’re an attractive option for various architectural styles and building types.

What’s more, composite fire doors offer good thermal and acoustic insulation so are a great choice for quieter environments and organisations with energy efficiency targets to achieve.

In the not-so-distant future, these next generation fire doors could include remote monitoring of a door’s status to provide live updates about any issues; sensors that detect smoke or fire; closing mechanisms that activate in the event of a fire; and integration with security systems to regulate who can pass through.

Two recent studies discovered how mycelium (a network of fungal threads) could be used to create compressed sheets of fire-retardant material. The hope is that such sheets could replace flammable cladding panels like the ones that contributed to the deadly Grenfell Tower fire.

In addition to this, innovations in intumescent technologies and new composites are leading to the development of even more sophisticated materials that can improve the performance and fire resisting properties of a fire door.
