Course Description
The Health & Safety Awareness course is the recognised entry point into construction health and safety training. It gives workers whether new to site or returning after a break a clear understanding of the hazards they’ll face, the legal framework they operate within, and their individual responsibilities for keeping themselves and those around them safe.
This is a CITB Site Safety Plus course, and certification is valid for five years. CITB It’s also one of the required steps towards the CSCS Green Labourer Card which is the baseline requirement for working on most construction sites in the UK.

By the end of the training delegates will be able to:
- Explain how health and safety legislation applies to their supervisory role
- Identify their responsibilities under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015
- Write and use risk assessments and method statements to manage hazards on site
- Carry out effective site inductions, toolbox talks and method statement briefings
- Conduct statutory site inspections and maintain the required registers
- Monitor site activities and intervene appropriately when unsafe practices are identified
- Report accidents, injuries and ill health in accordance with current legal requirements
- Manage welfare, environmental and occupational hygiene issues on site
- Understand their role within the wider site management structure

Over two days, delegates will cover:
- Health and safety law — the legal framework and your duties under it
- Accident prevention — why it happens and how to stop itYour role on site — where you fit within the management and control structure
- Risk assessments and method statements — what they are and why they matter
- Safe working practices — including manual handling, working at height, and plant movement
- PPE — types, purpose, and correct use
- Site rules and permit systems — understanding signs, signage, and access controls
- Welfare and environmental responsibilities
- Accident and incident reporting — how to report and what happens next
- First aid and emergency procedures on site
- Electrical safety and fire prevention
Course Dates and Booking
Upon completion of the course
- Delegates who pass the end-of-course assessment receive a digital CITB Site Safety Plus Health & Safety Awareness certificate, valid for five years. To remain certified, you will need to retake the course before the expiry date.
The HSA is also one of the two requirements for the CSCS Green Labourer Card. Combined with the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test, it enables delegates to apply for the card HSS Training — the baseline requirement for working on the majority of UK construction sites.
